Healthcare associations are uniquely positioned to respond with strategies that promote well-being, build resilience, and ensure that professionals are prepared for the future of care delivery.
This conversation with Stephanie Mercado, CAE, CPHQ, CEO of the National Association for Healthcare Quality, examines the human and organizational dimensions of workforce reform. Participants will explore initiatives that support mental health, career development, and workforce reentry, as well as the association’s role in policy advocacy, leadership development, and cultural transformation.

Nikki Golden, CAE, is a strategist with Association Laboratory, which helps associations make strategic business decisions—on everything from membership to strategic planning to educational programming/certification—using state-of-the-art research. Previous to this position, she was the executive director of the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery.
Nikki has been recognized for her work in the association world, making the inaugural list of Association Forum of Chicagoland/USAE Forty Under 40 list. Nikki is an active member of Association Forum of Chicagoland, where she has served on the Editorial Working Group and Content Planning Committee, chaired the CAE Working Group and Membership SIG. She also frequently facilitates for the Association Forum’s CAE Study Course and its Association 101 program, has presented at Forum Forward and has been a contributor to FORUM magazine.
Nikki built her association career working in both marketing and membership, with the National Association of the Remodeling Industry and the National Roofing Contractors Association.
Stephanie Mercado is the Chief Executive Officer of the National Association for Healthcare Quality® (NAHQ), the leading organization driving the advancement of healthcare Quality & Safety. With more than two decades of experience in the healthcare industry, Mercado has played a pivotal role in elevating the profession and positioning NAHQ as the authority on workforce competencies in Quality.
Since taking the helm in 2013, Mercado has led transformative initiatives that include the development of the NAHQ Healthcare Quality Competency Framework™ and the first-ever workforce study in Quality & Safety. These efforts have provided critical insights into the state of the healthcare Quality workforce and guided organizations in addressing gaps in readiness. Under her leadership, NAHQ launched Workforce Accelerator®, a scalable solution to assess, upskill, and align healthcare professionals with industry standards.
She serves on advisory panels and national committees, including those for AHRQ, CMS, IHI, and supports the WHO’s Global Patient Safety Action Plan. Mercado is a CPHQ, Certified Association Executive (CAE), and Health Evolution Senior Fellow. Among her many honors, she was named to Modern Healthcare’s “Top 25 Women Leaders” and “100 Most Influential People in Healthcare” in both 2023 and 2024.
